Wireless Internet
Check your e-mail
while having lunch. Get out of your dorm and have a beer while doing
your homework/research. Get away from that dial-up connection at your
house. File share with your friends and other customers. Connect to
your company's Intranet server while shooting pool. The possibilities
are endless with this incredible technology that is absolutely FREE!
How Does It
Work?
We have a constant
Internet connection called a Digital Subscriber Link (DSL). This is
much the same as you would have in your home. It is always on, and
does not require any sort of login. We have placed a network of
"wireless access points" throughout the property that give
computers the ability to access the DSL through a radio signal at 2.4
& 5 gigahertz. It works like a cordless phone, sending your
conversation through the air to a base station which converts the
signal and sends it through the phone line. In short, the access
points* let you roam about our facility with your laptop, PDA, or
smartphone, while surfing the Internet at lightening fast speed. This
service is free.
Do I Need Any
Special Equipment?
Our system will
work with any PDA, laptop, or smartphone that has a wireless
networking antenna. This is very common, and is standard on most new
equipment. We operate at 2.4 & 5ghz, which is compatible with
802.11a,b,& g protocols. This may sound complicated, but don't
despair. We assure you that getting online with our system is easy and
fun! If your equipment does not already have a wireless networking
antenna, one can be purchased from any store that sells computer
accessories such as Best Buy. We recommend Linksys
brand antennas, but any brand will work. Netgear,
and D-Link are also reputable
brands.
Morgan Street
Brewery is your LAN Party Headquarters!
Surfing the
Internet is the biggest advantage of our wireless system. You can
check your e-mail, research a term paper, or pay your bills right from
the bar! While the system is in fact a network, other computers in the
restaurant can not gain access to your files.....unless you let them.
Let me explain: Computer enthusiasts have a social event called a
"LAN party." LAN stands for Local Area Network. A LAN party
is when several users get together on a network and share files or
play interactive video games. Let's say that a few of your friends
have 1000's of files you want from their hard drives. It would be
great to get your hands on these files but downloading them from the
Internet would take forever even on a high speed connection. They
could burn them on CDR's but what a waste of media, not to mention
that CDR's only hold 700mb. The answer is to have a LAN party.
Transfer rates on a LAN are incredibly fast. Morgan Street uses a
wireless LAN (WLAN) and can transfer up to 72 megabit per second! We
use full duplex fast Ethernet 10/100 switches coupled with
802.11a,b,& g access points. There are no hubs in our system!
There is also no limit to the number of users that can be on at any
one time. You simply need to have the same workgroup name and a folder
shared on all involved computers. As I mentioned before, this
technology is commonly used with interactive video games too. Users
play these games through the Internet, but often the action is slow
and this essentially ruins the 3D gaming experience. These same games
played on a LAN are lightening fast and become an engaging social
experience when the other players are sitting around drinking beer in
the same room. Bring your friends and have a laptop WLAN party!
E-mail the banquet
department if you would like to schedule a LAN party. They will
only be able to help you in scheduling a private room for your group.
For technical support or questions e-mail Brewmaster/Webmaster
Marc Gottfried. Here's some important information you need to know
if you are interested in having your LAN party at Morgan Street
Brewery. In the dining and bar areas, our network is most useful as a
method of Internet access to our customers. Additionally, file
sharing, virtual private networking, and playing interactive video
games is also welcome. Your only connection choice is wireless
(802.11a,b, or g). Securing a private room through the banquet
department will get you 110V AC power, and an Ethernet connection (100
megabit) if you prefer it over wireless. We have several private rooms
that can handle groups of almost any size. Unfortunately, we have to
reserve the right to not seat groups of LAN users in the restaurant or
bar area which would take up more than one table or if we are
extremely busy.
Who says that you
have to know someone to get intimate with their hard drive? Let's say
it's 1am on Thursday night. You're relaxing with your laptop and a Red
Lager back in the alcoves (1st floor, west wall). On your way in you
saw a guy out on the back patio with a computer who looked like he
might have some videos. Run up there and ask him, "Hey, do you
want to file share?" It doesn't matter which access point
each user is connected to, since they are all on the same network.
He's one floor up and outside listening to the DJ, you're in the
basement back in the corner taking it easy. Let our switches do the
work, and see what he has to offer! Lots of users will have a folder
set up just for sharing already loaded with files.
In
the interest of promoting file sharing, Morgan Street suggests the
following settings:
Workgroup: goldenpilsner
Read Only Password: krystal
If you are here and connected to our WLAN, try adjusting your settings
to the above. If there is anyone else connected who also has their
settings adjusted in this way, their computer will appear in your
network and you will be able to access their shared folder. You won't
even have to go looking for someone to file share with! Eventually, we
hope to gain a following for this and expect people to show up
expecting to find other users to file share with. Morgan Street
Brewery is so much more than just a hotspot!
